Provenance

A tribute to the year that made the house of Frapin

“A blend of very old Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie, some predating 1888.”

In 1888, Pierre Frapin composed a cuvée that earned his house a gold medal at the Paris World’s Fair — a medal still kept in the cellars of the family estate in Segonzac. That victory launched the worldwide reputation of one of the oldest cognac houses: the Frapin family has worked this land without interruption since 1270, for twenty generations.

Cuvée 1888 was created as a tribute to that moment. The cellar master composed it from exceptionally old eaux-de-vie exclusively from Grande Champagne — the region’s most prized appellation — with a high share of Folle Blanche, a variety that has become a rarity in Cognac today. Exactly 1,888 numbered decanters were filled. No more will ever be made.

Eight of them are now available from my private collection. The bottles are unopened, stored upright, in the dark and at a stable temperature. Each can be personally inspected before purchase.

Craftsmanship

Crystal, gold wire and a stopper of pure gold

  • Crystal decanter Hand-finished crystal with the engraved P. Frapin signature; the shape echoes the traditional cognac “carafes de prestige”.
  • Gold spiral Gilded wire hand-wound around the neck and body of the decanter — the hallmark of the edition.
  • 24k gold stopper A solid 24-carat gold closure with the engraved Frapin signature and a metal seal.
  • Numbered edition Each decanter’s serial number is struck into the gold collar of the neck — see the gallery below.
  • Frapin leather case The original protective brown-leather case with a handle, viewing windows and a gilded interior; the decanter travels safely and presents beautifully.
